Frequently Asked Questions about Apache ActiveMQ®

Quick answers to the questions our clients ask most often.

What is the difference between Apache ActiveMQ® and Apache Artemis™?

Apache ActiveMQ (5.x) is the original, widely-deployed JMS broker built on a KahaDB journal store. Apache Artemis™ is the next-generation broker, originally donated to Apache from HornetQ, featuring a significantly higher-performance journal (AMQP, STOMP, MQTT, OpenWire), a non-blocking architecture, and improved support for high-availability clustering. Apache Artemis™ is the strategic direction for the project; ActiveMQ remains in active maintenance. meshIQ can help you assess which broker is right for your workload and, if appropriate, plan a migration.

What is Apache Camel and how does it work with Apache ActiveMQ®?

Apache Camel™ is an open-source integration framework that implements Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIPs). It provides 300+ connectors and a routing DSL (Java, XML, YAML) that makes it straightforward to move, transform, and route messages between systems. When used with ActiveMQ, Camel™ typically acts as the integration layer, reading from or writing to ActiveMQ queues/topics while connecting to databases, REST APIs, file systems, and other protocols. meshIQ provides consulting and support for both ActiveMQ and Camel™, individually and in combination.

Does meshIQ offer Apache ActiveMQ® and/or Apache Artemis™ support?

Yes. meshIQ provides full enterprise support for Apache ActiveMQ® and Apache Artemis™, including production incident management, performance tuning, clustering and high-availability configuration, AMQP/STOMP/OpenWire protocol support, and version upgrade planning. Our Apache Artemis™ engineers hold Apache committer status and contribute directly to the Artemis™ codebase.

Does meshIQ offer 24/7 Apache ActiveMQ® support?

Yes. All meshIQ enterprise support plans include 24/7/365 coverage with SLA-guaranteed response times. Critical (P1) incidents are acknowledged within 1 hour and assigned to a named engineer immediately. Enterprise and Premium plans include a dedicated Technical Account Manager and access to our on-call Apache contributors roster for the most complex issues.
