Many enterprises are adopting OpenShift in their journey to building and running containerized workloads in on-premise, cloud-based or hybrid environments. These initiatives leverage multiple application integration technologies, such as IBM MQ, Apache Kafka, or Tibco EMS.

The initial polling of IBM MQ customers reveals some interesting trends as we enter 2021.

Poll #1: When asked which one area they were looking to learn more about in 2021, the top response was “Tools for Cloud Migration of Messaging Middleware.”  It is important to note that all the respondents have IBM MQ messaging middleware in their estate, most also have Kafka, and many also have IIB (IBM Integration Bus), IBM ACE (App Connect Enterprise), and/or TIBCO EMS are part of their IT stack.

COVID-19 - Cost companies have a list of priorities that are set each year, and budgets and resources are aligned to these. For most companies the priority list looks something like this:

  1. New business initiatives (opening new offices/factories, product launches)
  2. Expansion of existing business initiatives (hiring more staff)
  3. Governance, risk & compliance (regulatory compliance, reporting & intelligent security)
  4. Improvements to performance and user experience (cloud migration, optimization)

COVID-19 has slowed down 1&2 for most businesses, and while there is pressure on budgets, all of a sudden 3&4 have moved to the top of the list.  While GRC improvements are always “planned “, often having a plan is enough to meet the requirements, so in many cases this is the “can that is kicked down the road”.

Cloud - Business applications have continued to become more complex, and the tools we all rely on to monitor performance have not always kept up.

The basic model that APM relies on, starts by capturing performance metrics and then using the knowledge developers and administrators have about the how these metrics can be analyzed to describe the performance of specific business processes.

It is amazing how MQ has managed to stay relevant over all of these years. Looking back to when it first came out in the 1990's, we were dealing with 2400 baud modems connected to remote locations running a number of different technologies, over spotty telephone lines using token ring protocols.

Recently I have setup test environments on both the IBM MQ and Confluent Kafka cloud offerings. For both of these the setup was quick and simple.

Since many applications today are using client connections, switching from a locally hosted service to a cloud offering was as simple as changing the connection URL.
